A fineliner illustration of Casa Batlló in Barcelona, Antoni Gaudí’s modernist masterpiece. Hand-drawn by artist, Josua Hattingh, available as a gallery-quality giclée print.

The Story

Casa Batlló has long held a special place in Josua’s journey as an artist. While studying art at school, Antoni Gaudí became his favourite architect — a master of form, imagination, and detail. This drawing is a tribute to that early inspiration, capturing the flowing lines and organic textures that make the building one of the most recognisable works of Catalan modernism.

Completed in 1904, Casa Batlló is steeped in symbolism. Its wavy façade is often compared to the sea, with balconies shaped like masks and columns reminiscent of bones, earning it the nickname “The House of Bones.” The roof, with its arched spine-like ridge, is said to represent the back of a dragon pierced by Saint George’s sword, a nod to Catalonia’s patron saint.
